The American Match Industry – Part 1

VIDEO ON THE TOPIC: Safety matches manufacturing process

Daan A. What is so revolutionary about your AM system and what makes it stand out compared to conventional systems? What really differentiates us is that from the very beginning we designed our system for series production. Other systems in the market were developed for prototyping, which means current systems are mainly set up for printing one-off parts and there is quite a bit of manual labor involved. Our MetalFAB1 system for series production is fully integrated and includes pre and post processing steps like stress relief heat treatment.

Besides that we have automated both powder and build plate handling so there is next to no manual labor involved. The MetalFAB1 modular architecture also affords the user maximum flexibility with the option of expanding the scope of the process to increase productivity as needed. Unique is also the Additive World software platform we developed to fully support the 3D metal printing workflow and data exchange.

Our partnership is multi-faceted — it started when GKN bought the MetalFAB1 Beta machine and entered our Beta program to test the system, provide feedback on performance and help us to optimize the system process and machine operation. GKN and AI are now beginning to focus on how to optimize the use of GKN powders and explore the possibilities of using water-atomized powders.

In terms of our integrated AM series production system, total cost per part is crucial, so we continue looking at lowering these costs for 3D printed parts by eliminating labor, reducing the system costs and increasing productivity. Together with GKN, we are working on reducing the material costs as well. Additive Manufacturing in the Automotive Industry: What are the main challenges from a machine builder perspective and what role does GKN play here for you?

In the automotive industry the requirements are high in terms of productivity, reliability and predictability. Together with GKN, we continue to drive improvement of both performance and cost levels. Because they are so intimately familiar with high volume production, they are the ideal partner to help us test our system in light of those stringent automotive requirements.

Which new approach can you as young company bring into a rapidly developing environment? While we are a relatively new player in the metal AM industry, the market is developing so fast that we have already firmly established ourselves on the market.

We thoroughly understand the experience of existing users of this technology. When we started developing equipment and software, we interviewed them, compiled their clear list of requirements and then fed this in to our work as we developed the system.

The market was such that players were able to sell what they built, meaning the incentive to change was relatively low. This was reinforced by resistance to changed machine specifications by regulated markets like medical and aerospace where change often means expensive recertification.

As a newcomer, we had no legacy, we could think freely and develop a completely different concept. So we defined a new category in metal additive manufacturing with our series production system. And because we are so customer-centric, we are capable of quickly and adeptly going from identifying a need to developing and offering an appropriate solution. It would also allow existing users like GKN to develop the build strategies and process settings for new materials and applications before transferring these to their larger industrial MetalFAB1 systems for series production without any disturbance to their production planning and regular operations.

The current markets for additive manufacturing — for instance aerospace, automotive, medical and high-tech components — are high-end markets. Together with GKN, we will continue working on lowering costs per part to a level where we can compete with casting, and thus open up a large new market. We aim to be industrial leader in metal AM for prototyping, small series production and large series fabrication.

After having established our position in Europe from the start, we are now ready to expand into new geographic areas, for instance with a Process and Application Development Center in the USA and then enter the Asian market next year. Our geographic growth is largely driven by the tremendous interest those markets have expressed in our products.

After launching our system in we sold four Beta systems — GKN has one — and in the meantime also the first production series machines are installed, for example at BMW.

This confirms the market appetite for series production equipment, and we expect to continue growing as we have large demand in our sales pipeline and we are committed to capturing the opportunities out there. Our collaboration with GKN, with our joint expertise in equipment, software, materials and end-user applications, is crucial to further develop and improve this technology and its implementation. We are very grateful to GKN for this collaboration and are eager to expand it, also into other geographical areas.

When we think of the nineteenth century we tend to think of it as the age of steam — the age of the steam engine, steam-powered factories, and iron and steelworks. In order to produce this steam, an easy source of ignition was needed. Up until the nineteenth century, fires would be lit with a flint and steel which would be struck together to release sparks. In the first half of the nineteenth century, however, the match was invented and its invention brought with it a new occupational disease.

But other aspects must also meet your needs: the manufacturing process, capacity, standards, turnaround time and cost. Each type of potential partners has its benefits, but knowing the ins and outs of each is essential. Before you start interviewing possibilities, sit down with your design and production team leaders and walk through your requirements and options. Does the supplier have the manufacturing capabilities you need? When possible, visit the factory floor to look at its machinery. Does it have the manufacturing speed and capacity to respond to quick-turn orders during product development, market launch or production phases?

A match is a tool for starting a fire. Typically, modern matches are made of small wooden sticks.

At its height, the Diamond match plant in Cloquet, Minn. This week the remaining 85 workers were told that they will all have to look for new jobs. According to a report in the Pioneer Press , the new owners of the plant, where the company manufactures toothpicks, matchsticks and other wooden products, have decided not to keep the facility. But after touring the plant, Royal Oak decided it did not want to include the plant in its purchase of Newell. Without a buyer, Newell ultimately decided to shutter it within six months. Representatives from Newell said they will provide assistance to the remaining employees of the plant. The facility has been around since In the s it was renovated and outfitted with equipment from Sweden, some of which is still being used in the plant today. Minnesota Public Radio reports that the plant once had a reputation for multiple safety hazards, including open saws that often injured workers and fires started from employees stepping on matches that had dropped on the floor. The invention of disposable lighters and the electric stove undoubtedly sent the matchstick industry into decline decades ago.

Match production

Introduction of matches change the way we use fire in a profound way. With the ability for everyone to instantly create fire and make it portable, modern human civilization changed in many ways. The discovery of matches was a long process filled with numerous various designs that used vastly different chemical ingredients and modes of igniting the flames. However after the long period of innovation, one match design finally emerged as a winner. Even though it was produced in by the billions every year, this match had few fatal flaws white phosphorus was toxic, and the matches had tendency of self-inflammation due to slight friction that eventually forced them out of production. Safety matches moved to red phosphorus that was located not on a match, but on a dedicated striking surfaces. Preparing of wood. Wood is cut, into small matches, soaked in fire retardant ammonium phosphate and left to dry. Striking end of the stick is then soaked in hot paraffin wax, which will provide small amount of fuel to the wood, enabling it to burn more easily.
