AMR allows the automatic collection of data from energy-metering devices and transfers that data to a central database for analysis and billing purposes. The measurement and collection system is commonly referred to as advanced metering infrastructure AMI and is used in the electric, natural gas and water industries around the world. The choice to automate key processes has two broad benefits: reduced costs for the utility and improved quality of service for commercial, industrial and residential customers. AMR also supports conservation efforts to create more efficient usage and reduce wasted resources. Choosing to implement an AMR system involves challenges that will affect virtually every aspect of a utility. In all cases, one of the biggest technology challenges is the choice of a communication path.

Automatic meter reading, or AMR, is the technology of automatically collecting consumption, diagnostic, and status data from water meter or energy metering devices gas, electric and transferring that data to a central database for billing, troubleshooting, and analyzing. This technology mainly saves utility providers the expense of periodic trips to each physical location to read a meter. Another advantage is that billing can be based on near real-time consumption rather than on estimates based on past or predicted consumption.

This timely information coupled with analysis can help both utility providers and customers better control the use and production of electric energy, gas usage, or water consumption. AMR technologies include handheld, mobile and network technologies based on telephony platforms wired and wireless , radio frequency RF , or powerline transmission.

Radio frequency based AMR can take many forms. The more common ones are handheld, mobile, satellite and fixed network solutions. In a two-way or "wake up" system, a radio transceiver normally sends a signal to a particular transmitter serial number, telling it to wake up from a resting state and transmit its data.

The meter attached transceiver and the reading transceiver both send and receive radio signals and data. This means the reading device can be a receiver only, and the meter AMR device a transmitter only.

Data goes one way, from the meter AMR transmitter to the meter reading receiver. There are also hybrid systems that combine one-way and two-way technologies, using one-way communication for reading and two way communication for programming functions.

RF based meter reading usually eliminates the need for the meter reader to enter the property or home, or to locate and open an underground meter pit. The utility saves money by increased speed of reading, has lower liability from entering private property, and has less chance of missing reads because of being locked out from meter access. The technology based on RF is not readily accepted everywhere. In several Asian countries the technology faces a barrier of regulations in place pertaining to use of the radio frequency of any radiated power.

For example in some countries the radio frequency which is generally in ISM band is not free to use even for low power radio of 10 mW.

Initiatives in radio frequency AMR in such countries are being taken up with regulators wherever the cost of licensing outweighs the benefits of AMR. PLC is a method where electronic data is transmitted over power lines back to the substation, then relayed to a central computer in the utility's main office. This would be considered a type of fixed network system—the network being the distribution network which the utility has built and maintains to deliver electric power. Such systems are primarily used for electric meter reading.

Some providers have interfaced gas and water meters to feed into a PLC type system. Open Metering System The Open Metering System OMS stands for a manufacturer and utilities independent standardization for Meter-Bus based communication between utility meters electricity, gas, water, district heat, heat cost allocators and systems in the field of Smart meter. With the starting point of the smart metering initiative driven by the European Union, several German multi utilities companies public utility offering more than only one type of supply like electricity, gas, water and district heat joined and asked international manufacturers of revenue meters to create a common standard.

The goal was to have meters with standardized communication interfaces and systems in the future. For further information about OMS please visit www. We Commit.

Smart metering is widely regarded as the cornerstone for future smart grids and is currently being deployed all over the developed world, with a growing number of large-scale initiatives now also being launched in developing countries. The Asia-Pacific constitutes the largest market by far while North America ranks as the third-largest market after Europe.

At booth 41 of the exhibition innogy will present the products of three well-known electricity meter manufacturers with integrated lemonbeat technology. Depending on their needs, these can communicate via two different radio technologies either with the reading device of an energy supplier or with a receiver unit in the home of the electricity customer. The cost-effective receiver unit, developed in-house by lemonbeat GmbH , establishes a local connection to the electricity meter for the secure and reliable transmission of consumption data. This data can then be used to realize value-added offers that significantly increase customer loyalty, for example by providing detailed consumption data to the end customer.

See also the EMFs from traditional rotating-disc meters. We use the term "Smart Meter" loosely here. Much of this also applies to different variants of Automatic Meter Reading - meters that transmit the meter reading but without the full Smart Meter functionality. And it's possible to have Smart Meters that don't use wireless technology at all, if they transmit data over the power lines for example. Smart Meters produce very low power-frequency EMFs. RF EMFs are generally outside the scope of this website, which deals with power frequencies. Smart Meters communicate both outside and inside the home. Outside the home - the Wide Area Network or WAN - they communicate information on meter readings to the electricity company, and information on tariffs etc back the other way. In many Smart Meters, both of these use wireless technologies.

Progress in technology is making possible the replacement of mechanical and electromechanical meters for energy, water, and gas with digital meters showing advanced functionalities. With these new tools in their hands, users are evolving from a purely passive role to a more active one, in which everyone can take control of their consumer habits and define their own strategy to save resources. With the new technology, utilities and users can communicate, paving the way for new scenarios of smart usage of primary resources. There are several advantages in using smart meters. Utility companies can benefit from the automated data collection, avoiding human errors due to manual readings and, ultimately, reducing labor costs.

Automatic Meter Reading and the Advanced Metering Infrastructure

They need to provide transparent and accurate information on water consumption patterns. This leads to accurate billing information and keeps stakeholders aware of their usage. However, it could not provide this data due to a lack of sophisticated IT infrastructure which could collect, store and manage data from thousands of water meters. There were certain roadblocks which restricted on fulfilling its ultimate goal- to offer products and solutions beyond AMR.
